Gill Chattey

Ideas are the central focal point of my work, the inspiration for which can come from anywhere; Alan Fletcher described the moment as:

“‘an experience when and unanticipated and spontaneous idea suddenly pops up into the head from nowhere. An unnerving sensation that, rather than us making something happen, something is happening to us’

Often the idea is result of interpreting or reinterpreting language and the language of signs. I will work in any medium which will execute the idea to its fullest this always creates new challenges within my practice.

Bonnie Tseng

It is hard to use words to present who am I. But through my works are not hard to find out my personality. This is the most easy way to show everyone who am I. I love drawing. Drawing make me feel happy and relax. Especially hand drawing. I can spent all day do nothing but draw. I think maybe that is the reason through my draw it’s easy to know who am I than by use words.

I worked as a museum Picture Researcher in London for 3 years before returning to my birthplace of Bristol to study Design. I am interested in the way images tell stories, illustration, typography and the relationship between handmade crafts with contemporary computer graphics. My early work focused on drawing - where all design begins.

Adeline Marteil

I am 22-years-old graphic designer. I originally come from France, where I did my undergraduate degree in graphic design. Currently a Master student at UWE, I use this opportunity to develop my practice through a variety of projects.

My interest in graphic arts is not new and it has always been an important part of my life. Very curious and keen to explore, I take my inspiration in the numerous trips I did, but also in my everyday life, exploring issues and meeting people. Indeed, I do not see graphic design as an end in itself, but rather as a mean to help and improve people’s lives, as well as serve the society.

Particularly interested in the use of different mediums, I like to mix photography, drawing, collage and typography in my work as it was the case with The Library of Babel. Recently, I have also started experimenting with printmaking, in order to take my practice further.

Greg Williams

I am a freelance graphic designer and illustrator from Switzerland.

Even though I’m from a country surrounded by mountains, I am passionate about oceans. Somehow the unknown appeal me. The elements of nature impress me and I am inspired by them. Such as wind, waves, vegetation, wildlife… I translate the feeling i have from my lifestyle trough my artworks.

Freedom is the key to creativity.

My name is Bernadette Schoeffl, and I’m from Linz, Austria. I am currently an exchange student at UWE Bower Ashton – a change of location that has been very refreshing and truly inspiring for me so far. The exchange semester is part of my master studies in Visual Communication at the University of Arts and Industrial Design in Linz, with special focus on graphic design and photography. I particularly enjoy editorial design, illustration as well as experimental typography. My interests include traveling, good company, bad television and soft colours like Pantone 182 C.

I am a person who loves illustration, simple graphics and aim to change my career path to become a graphic designer.

Coming from Taiwan and living in UK now, I encountered the differences between western and eastern culture. So, I try to bring this influence into my illustrations, base on the story of “The Library of Babel”

Fei Yuan

In the exhibition I am going to show a group of work was developed from ‘the Library of Babel project. From the very beginning of observing the libraries and books around us in our lives to trying to make a range of shapes out of the books and photographs, and then to cutting out a book made the book sculpture. Going through the whole project, religion elements were concerned as the original text describes the environment of Babel.

Shapes, are another very important factor in the process of development. The combination of shapes and religions made me begin to try to add the simplest shapes in my work, those were square, triangle and circle. The repeating of one simple shape in every different but similar book page was the key thing of presenting religious feeling from a shape of the book. And in the end the photographs with very close shots on the cut out book brought out the effect of the unreadable words, and that was just simply fascinating.

Other than the ‘Library of Babel’ final work, I am also going to show the practical works I have done while developing the ideas for the project. Including 2 lithography print works, and the original book sculpture.

Apart from the project ‘Library of Babel’ I am going to show a 60 seconds animation film of the other project ‘All about me’. The film was developed with stop motion technique and edited in Adobe After Effect.

YU-Chen Chang (Jenny)

After graduated from Ming-Chuan University, she gave herself a chance to experience different cultures and learn in other country rather than stay in a comfort zone. Having courage for oneself to doing something which never done before will definitely help one to discover possibility and make progress is her faith in life.

Now she feels very happy and satisfied with her new creative life in Bristol. Though the course in MA is kind of challenge for her, she see this as the way to another stage of gaining new knowledge.

In the future, living a more creative life and sharing happiness to others are her goals to achieve in the future. Therefore, she will keep finding a happy language in art and design then apply them in daily lives.

Unsuccessful touching moment

Gathering concepts

Photography makes every snap record every past moment. No matter when and where, when you press the shutter button, you capture fragments of time. Since long time ago, countless photographers record the touching moment they see with cameras and those snaps become inspiring stories.

I believe that in this developed society, people who love photography must have that very moment that you want to press the shutter button, may be a endless pasture land or the silhouette of beloved one.

As time went by, the photos and films that were not preserved well blurred, it might be because rookie photographer could not control well of the balance between the aperture and shutter, leading an overexposure or underexposure of photographs. All in all, these snaps could no more be considered as “successful photographs.” However, does that imperfection makes this photo meaningless? And makes the touching moment gone?

No matter the images are clear or not, one thing is for sure that there must be a moving split second that urged you press the button in hand.

Does the meaning of photography only confined to a perfect match of images and skills?

Nikki Gittins

During my BA (Hons) in Graphic Design and Packaging, I became fascinated by the relationship of artwork (in particular typography) on a 3D surface. This investigation continues through my work, both experimental and commercial. As a designer I strive for creative innovation within my practice, which currently looks at the changing languages within the modern world.

I’m an exchange student from Taiwan. I was doing some research about emotion design in Taiwan. I’m interesting in Commercial Design, Infographic and Illustration. I love cats, I love nice people, I love music, I love movies, I love shopping, I love me!

In this artwork, I tried to use different strokes and drawing methods to release another kind of emotion in the subconscious. At the moment of drawing, the concentration and emotion-laden reaction happened just like what happened when dancing, that revealed the emotion.
